Chick Fil A Camp Out takes over Torrance
I was driving from my office and saw the tents and knew I had to go and check it out. It was 5am and had been raining. People were just starting to lumber out of their sleeping bags and tents to face the very cold and wet morning and the prospect of having go through the aspects of waking up and preparing for a new day. The parking lot was very quiet and I felt like an intruder as I quietly walked up. I wasn’t sure what I would wind up doing, just take a picture, or see if I could get someone to pose for a photo and even perhaps, talk to me.
“I am lucky no one threw anything at me”
I circled the encampment and saw activity near the front entrance. There was a security vehicle parked out front along with security personal making sure that all was safe for the campers. People were starting to scurry about very busily which made it hard to find a good moment to ask someone to be in a picture for Lunch Pig. I walked up to one guy and he quickly ran off and said he could not talk, “too busy!”, he said from over his shoulder at me as he disappeared. I can’t blame him. Camping can be a pain in the ass and the last thing you want to do is talk to some guy pointing a camera at you and claiming he is from a blog called “Lunch Pig” when you are first climbing our of your tent. I guess I am lucky no one threw anything at me.
“Grand Prize: Free Chick-fil-A food products for 1 year, consisting of 52 Coupons”
Let’s start with the obvious, why are there tents in a parking lot in Torrance across from the Del Amo Fashion Square? That’s easy. It is for the Grand Opening of the new Chick Fil A on 21821 Hawthorne Blvd. Each Winner gets a years worth of Chick-Fil-A meals in the form of a coupon book of 52 individual meal coupons.
I eventually met Nancy McIntyre of San Pedro and she was kind enough to pose for a photo for me as well as talk a little while she awoke. This was her first time at one and she was there with her family. She explained that her daughter had done one before and it seemed like a lot of fun.
I couldn’t agree with her more, it did look like fun, and even though it was cold and rainy, everyone was having a good time. You could feel the excitement in the air. I was surprised because it was not like I expected. I forgot about the festival sort of atmosphere that goes along with people who are having an adventure of sorts. This is definitely that. I watched moms, dads, grand parents waking up excited little ones. I knew those kids would be remembering this crazy adventure for their life time.
Contests are fun, and in this one everyone is a winner. Nice job Chick Fil A for bringing something fun and different to Fast Food openings and chicken.
