International House of Pancakes (IHOP)
24631 Crenshaw Blvd
Torrance, CA 90505
According to the IHOP website, IHOP restaurants are franchised and operated by Glendale, Calif.-based International House of Pancakes, LLC and its affiliates. Although IHOP restaurants are best known for their signature pancakes, omelettes and other breakfast specialties, IHOP restaurants are open throughout the day and evening hours and offer a broad array of lunch, dinner and snack items as well. More than 99 percent of IHOP restaurants are operated by franchisees, who are independent business people. According to the site, there are 1,513 IHOP restaurants. The menu is about what you would expect – a restaurant dedicated to the first meal of the day with a focus on batter and syrup. Parking is very very bad in this corner of the Torrance Crossroads. You are fighting for spaces with In-N-Out, Chipotle, Yogurtland and a string of independent restaurants. Plan on walking a bit and park closer to Home Depot.
CARL: Oliver and I are on a quest to review every restaurant in the “Torrance Crossroads” plaza. International House of Pancakes or “IHOP” is in the plaza but I wasn’t really looking forward to having lunch there as IHOP really isn’t known for any meal after 11AM and I was certain the tables would closely resemble a fly trap of sticky surfaces. Besides, this blog is called “Lunch Pig” – not “Breakfast Pig”. Because we are dedicated professionals we decided to use the coupon we received in the Money Mailer for a two-for-one lunch and throw caution to the wind. Both Oliver and I scoured the menu but we really didn’t find much in the way of lunch specials – just the usual selection of sandwiches and burgers surrounded by every imaginable breakfast item.
I opted for the $8.99 Turkey Bacon Club with a side of Onion Rings. The onion rings were among the best I have ever had. Perfectly cooked and tasty with a light feel – check out the picture to the left – they still look good! The sandwich was prepared on a fresh roll with turkey, bacon, lettuce and tomato. The sandwich was surprisingly good and just the right size. Ingredients were fresh and there was some thought put into the sandwich – not just tossed together as I might have expected. IHOP serves Coca-Cola products and refills are free – always a bonus in my book. The restaurant was clean and not sticky as I had feared, the food was good, the service friendly and the free lunch coupon was a real plus. If the prices weren’t so high – or if they had a menu of lunch specials, I would have considered a slightly higher rating but as it is, IHOP gets a surprising 4 pigs. Congratulations IHOP – well done.
Oliver: Growing up I often ate at iHOP with my parents and it has some nice memories for me. After moving on my own and then starting a family I never got back into the habit of eating there. It was off my radar and there were many more exciting places to eat. So when I went there today, like Carl, I had an idea of what to expect, I was expecting a greasy spoon sort of experience, only a bit more commercial.
It didn’t start too well because it took forever to think about what looked good on the menu. It seemed rather high priced for a lunch, nothing really under $8 and there was only a few choices. I had questioned whether I should go ahead and order a breakfast. Breakfast is always good and it certainly would mix things up a little. Breakfast Lunch, Lunch breakfast, which should I do. As was once said, “when in Rome, do as the Romans,” and on that, I ordered a Bacon Egg Cheeseburger with French Fries, $8.95. As you can see it looks pretty good, and it turned out to taste very good. The bun was soft and fancier than a hamburger bun. The fries were good, not too greasy or crunchy. I scarfed down the whole thing and cleaned my plate. I did mention that the price was high, but we were prepared and Carl had brought a great coupon that got us a free meal. What a deal it was. The place was clean and quiet, the food was great and in the end, a great price due to the coupon. I was not expecting it, but I am giving them 4 pigs.
