Shakey’s is a chain of Pizza restaurants located predominantly in the Western United States. The Shakey’s on Torrance Blvd has been there for many years and features a woodsy interior of mixed table and booth seating. For lunch, you first visit the cashier and are provided with a tray which includes your plate, soda cup, napkins and utensils. Parking is very very difficult at this location because of the very popular Rascals on one side and Subway on the other side. Some street parking is available on the street to the west of the plaza.
CARL: Shakey’s advertises their “Bunch of Lunch” special on Tv and in print. On the surface it sounds like a great idea – all the pizza, Mojo Potatoes, spaghetti and salad you can eat for one low price. Admittedly, my only experience with Shakey’s was after soccer games with my two kids. Shakey’s is a great place for that sort of gathering as the food is cheap, the facility is kid friendly and there is a room full of games for the kids to play while they wait for the pizza. Because of those experiences, I have always associated Shakey’s with screaming kids and I have not voluntarily returned – until today. The dreaded coupon book came in the mail and sure enough – the coupon provided for a lunch for just $5.29. Time to suck it up and try it out. The hot food side of the buffet features a few different kinds of pizza, spaghetti, mashed potatoes, corn, fried chicken and the Shakey’s Mojo Potatoes. The cold food side – rarely touched by the lunch crowd – is a fairly typical salad bar which looked surprisingly good. I ended up going back to the hot food side twice and sampling a few different types of pizza and the Mojo Potatoes. The quality was average. The food was fresh. Lines were short. Diet Coke was $2.09. It’s really hard to find anything to complain about – or to write home about here. Foodies please stay away. This is food for the common man! I give Shakey’s a solid 3.5 Pigs.
OLIVER: I had not been to a Shakey’s in 30 years. I remember commercials from the 70s with rag time bands and old silent films playing. The new version is not too far off. $5.29 buffet gets you as much food as you can eat, and that is a great thing. The fried chicken was very tasty. I had a few slices of pizza that were good and they keep fresh pizza coming.
After eating we decided to check out their arcade and we wound up playing a couple of games of air hockey and that was a lot of fun. I give Shakey’s 3.5 pigs, for $5.29 plus the price of a coke you can eat yourself sick. I love the deal.
