KFI and Tim Conway Jr at Farrell’s Ice Cream for Make a wish and Children’s Hospital – July 5th

Lunch Pig is a big fan of the Tim Conway Jr show on KFI AM 640 Los Angeles, and we listen all the time. That and we love ice cream. So when we found out that Tim Conway Jr and KFI AM 640 are going to do a live remote from a Farrell’s in Mission Viejo to help the Make-a-Wish Foundation and Choc, the Children’s Hospital of Orange County, we knew we had to let everyone know. I can’t think of a better excuse to over indulge oneself in some great ice cream while seeing a great host in action.

Farrell’s 3rd annual Splendiferously Superiffic Summer Spectacular Ice Cream Eating Challenge

The main event will be their on going Ice Cream Eating Challenge, this is a qualifying event for the Farrell’s 3rd annual Splendiferously Superiffic Summer Spectacular Ice Cream Eating Challenge. Winners from six different categories at the July 15 Championship event in Downtown Brea will walk away with free Farrell’s ice cream for an entire year, a trophy, up to $500 (for the professional category) and, of course, the title of Farrell’s World’s Fastest and Best Ice Cream Eater. It is definitely going to be a lot of fun for a good cause.

CARL: Growing up in Torrance in the 70s meant, by local statute, you were required to attend at least one birthday party at Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlor. Add to that Boy Scout events, Little League parties, graduations, and any available excuse to eat ice cream and you have all the reasons needed to make a night of it at Farrell’s. I can clearly remember the costumes the staff wore, the sticky tables, the adequate burgers, the candy store (as if the ice cream weren’t enough) but the best memories are of the signature ice cream dishes “The Zoo” and “The Pig’s Trough”. The Pig’s Trough was a huge banana split big enough to share but a 12 year old Carl could handle it just fine. The Trough was big but The Zoo was a spectacle. It arrived on a stretcher carried by two servers and featured piles of ice cream and a variety of plastic animal toys on top. I don’t know how much it was back in the 70s but a Zoo will set you back $49.99 today. I have a picture of me at Farrell’s in my Boy Scout uniform somewhere. I’ll post it when I find it.

OLIVER: One of my best memories growing up in Torrance was going to birthday parties that were being held at Farrell’s. It was such a big part of growing up that as kids we would sit around and talk about when the next birthday at Farrell’s might be. Along with that we would talk about eating an entire full “The Zoo” by yourself. Being a kid was great.
