Cilantro Mexican Grill is located in a strip mall along Pacific Coast Hwy near the corner of Ocean Ave. To the left is a massage parlor and a liquor store. To the right are some shops including a hair salon and an educational book store. This location was a restaurant called Piquin Picoso until approximately December 2011. Cilantro opened in mid-January 2012. Parking is plentiful in this plaza even during peak lunch times.

CARL: Oliver and I have been anxious to try the new restaurant that took over one of our favorite restaurants, Piquin Picoso. We wanted to be one of the first to report on it and I have some mixed results to report. The small restaurant charm is still there with the seating and the friendly service. I did miss the fun, hand made menus as Cilantro has replaced them with menus that are trapped under the glass tabletops. I’m sure this approach saves money but it makes it hard to scan the menu and make your decision. I ordered a the Cilantro Special Burrito ($8.50) which features double steak, beans, cilantro, onions and salsa. The burrito arrived looking a bit lonely on a large plate (check out the pic to the left). Perhaps some rice and beans to go with it might have been cool. Regardless, the burrito was tasty and flavorful. Lots of meat and it was mildly spicy. I ordered my usual Diet Coke ($1.75) but had a little surprise when I noticed that refills were .50¢ each. I could have spent $4 on Diet Coke easy so I dialed it back and got by with only one refill. Overall tasty and I will come back to try some different things. The staff is super friendly and the charming chef came out to see how we liked our lunch. With a little tweaking this could be a great neighborhood restaurant. Four Pigs.

OLIVER: I always welcome a new eatery in the area. Cilantro calls itself an authentic Mexican restaurant with many namesake dishes. The meal starts with multi-colored corn chips along with a very tasty salsa.

After giving the menu a good once over I was drawn to the fish tacos. The dish comes with 3 tacos with chopped up fish. The fish was was very tasty with an excellent  seasoning. I also would have liked something along with the taco’s, but it was very satisfying none the less.

I’m looking forward to trying their other signature dishes and I wish them luck in their new venture. I give them 4 pigs.
