Y Not Burgers – American Fast Food – Torrance

Y-Not Burgers 22940 Hawthorne Blvd Torrance, CA 90505 (310) 375-4202 http://www.ynotburgers.com ‘Y’ Not burgers has been a family-owned South Bay fixture for decades. Located at the north/East corner of Hawthorne Blvd. and 230th Street just north of Lomita Blvd., this is the only drive thru restaurant for block in each direction. Breakfast lunch and dinner is served and Y Not has been named the Best Fast Food Restaurant by The Daily Breeze for 2010 and 2011. In addition to the regular fast food items, they offer turkey and ostrich burgers. Seating inside is all booths and is comfortable but plastic. Parking is usually no problem in the Y Not lot. CARL: I’ve been a customer of this Y Not Burgers since I was a teenager. Prices here are a bit higher than McDonalds or Carl’s Jr. so Y Not was more of a treat in the lean years. I’ve had many burgers here and many chicken sandwiches one the years. All super good. Since I had an insane burger last night at the Din Din A Go Go food truck even last night, I opted for a more conservative lighter lunch. A B.L.T. sounded just about perfect. For $7.70 you get a nice B.L.T., a small bag of fries and a medium soda. The sandwich is a good size with plenty of bacon, fresh lettuce and tomato with just a touch of mayo. The bread was crispy and perfectly toasted, the lettuce was nicely cut and compact and the tomato was a nice thickness. The flavor was just as expected with a nice mixture of hot/cool crispy/moist. The French Fries are medium sized and medium thickness – quite possibly my favorite fast food fries. I love the refillable sodas and I plowed through two refills on my Diet Coke. Y Not isn’t cheap but it really isn’t THAt much more than comparable quality fast food. For those looking for something a touch higher quality – Y Not is highly recommended. A solid 4 Pigs!

OLIVER: Y-Not is one of those places you grew up with and everyone loved. Patty melts, steak sandwiches, burgers, pastrami and breakfast were all things people claimed Y-Not did the best. Perhaps it is because it is familiar and comfortable and unlike most things in the southland, hasn’t changed. I have a good friend who moved to Sweden and returns every few years to visit family and friends, and one of his stops is Y-Not. Gotta be good if you are willing to endure a 8000 mile flight. I wanted to get something that I knew a lot of people would be trying, so that meant a burger, and I wanted a lot, so I ordered their double cheeseburger combination. This includes a 1/2lb double cheeseburger, fries and a refillable Coke fountain drink. I substituted onion rings instead of the fries. Grand total came to $8.50 before tax. The burger was plenty large, has shredded lettuce, thousand island dressing, pickles and tomato. The onion rings were great, nice and crispy, and not too thick. A really good “all American” meal from this Torrance landmark.  I can’t complain about anything, well, I can complain about one thing, it was not till doing this review that I found out they served Ostrich Burgers! I am seriously pissed I missed this chance to eat a new animal. They absolutely need to work on their marketing of ostrich burgers. Other than that I think they are due all the kudo’s one hears if they know anyone who lives in Torrance. I give them 4 Pigs
